Gynecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement)
Gynecomastia refers to the enlargement of breast tissue in men. Contrary to common belief, it is a very common condition. Hormonal imbalances, liver or thyroid diseases, and certain medications can cause breast enlargement in men. However, in more than 90% of cases, no specific underlying cause is identified.
Today, several modern treatment methods are available for male breast reduction.
How Does Male Breast Enlargement Appear?
Gynecomastia can present in different forms:
Enlargement caused by increased breast gland tissue
Enlargement caused by excess fat tissue
Enlargement caused by a combination of both glandular and fatty tissue
What Treatment Methods Are Used?
In the past, open surgical techniques were commonly used to treat gynecomastia. However, these methods had disadvantages such as visible scarring and difficulty in removing tissue evenly, so they are rarely used today.
Op. Dr. Ercan Demiray generally prefers modern liposuction techniques instead of traditional surgical procedures for patients with gynecomastia. With advances in technology, modern methods such as laser liposuction and VASER liposuction (ultrasonic liposuction) are widely used.
These advanced techniques provide more effective aesthetic results while also eliminating one of the main concerns of patients—visible scars. In cases where breast enlargement is caused by glandular tissue, the powerful effect of the VASER device is also effective in breaking down hardened breast tissue.
How is Male Breast Reduction Performed with VASER Liposuction?
VASER liposuction is one of the most effective treatment options for gynecomastia today. Also referred to as VASER lipolysis, this technique specifically targets fat cells while preserving surrounding tissues such as blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
Because the device selectively targets fat tissue, procedures performed with VASER generally result in less pain, swelling, and bruising compared to traditional methods.
The rapid recovery process allows patients to return to their normal daily activities quickly. Using ultrasonic sound waves, VASER liposuction is an effective and successful treatment method not only for male breast reduction but also for body contouring and fat removal in various areas of the body.
How is Laser Liposuction Performed?
Laser liposuction is another commonly used method for male breast reduction. In this technique, laser energy is used to break down fat tissue, which is then removed from the body.
Laser technology also contributes to a faster recovery process, making it a popular treatment option.
Is Surgery Necessary for Gynecomastia Treatment?
Currently, there is no effective non-surgical solution that permanently eliminates male breast enlargement. Attempting to treat gynecomastia with certain products sold on the market may even lead to undesirable results.
However, modern techniques such as VASER and laser liposuction are often considered minimally invasive procedures, offering faster recovery times and avoiding large surgical incisions compared to traditional surgery.
What Type of Anesthesia is Used? Can Gynecomastia Recur?
This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and the surgeon’s recommendation. Patients can usually be discharged on the same day.
Since the excess tissue is permanently removed, recurrence of breast enlargement is very unlikely.
Preparation Before Gynecomastia Surgery
Before male breast reduction surgery, the following precautions should be taken:
Herbal teas, vitamins, and blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin) should be discontinued approximately 7–10 days before surgery. If you are taking prescribed blood thinners, you must inform your doctor.
If general anesthesia will be used, you should fast before the surgery as instructed by your doctor.
Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided.
After surgery, patients will need to wear a medical compression garment for approximately 2–3 weeks, as recommended by Op. Dr. Ercan Demiray. The medical team will provide this garment after the procedure.
Will There Be Scars After Male Breast Reduction?
Thanks to modern techniques used today, traditional open surgery is usually unnecessary. Instead, VASER or laser devices are used.
A very small incision is made to insert the thin cannulas used by these devices. Through this incision, ultrasonic or laser energy is delivered to dissolve the fat or glandular tissue. As a result, visible scarring is generally not a concern.
Additionally, these technologies can have a skin-tightening effect, helping to enhance the definition of the chest muscles.
