Breast Augmentation Surgery
The breast is a very important part of a woman’s body, and therefore the appearance and shape of the breasts are extremely important for many women. Breast augmentation with silicone implants is currently one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the world. Silicone implants are also referred to as breast implants or prostheses. The procedure of placing silicone implants into the breast to increase its size and improve its shape is called breast augmentation surgery.
Why is Breast Augmentation Needed?
There are several reasons why women may choose breast augmentation surgery:
Breast deformities may occur due to hormonal changes.
After pregnancy and breastfeeding, breasts may become smaller, sag, or lose volume.
Aging or weight fluctuations can lead to changes in breast shape.
Some women may have naturally small breasts due to genetics.
Congenital breast asymmetry may create an uneven appearance.
After breast cancer treatment, women who have lost a breast may wish to restore their previous appearance using implants.
For these reasons, many women are increasingly interested in breast enlargement and breast lift procedures. Today, the most effective and reliable method to achieve the desired breast size is the placement of a breast implant (silicone prosthesis). Although other techniques such as fat injection or filler materials may also be used, their long-term results are still debated.
Teardrop or Round Implants?
Breast implants can be divided into two main types based on their filling material: gel-filled implants and saline-filled implants. Today, gel implants are more commonly used worldwide because they provide more natural-looking results.
Gel implants can also be categorized by shape as round implants or teardrop (anatomical) implants.
There is no universally “best” implant type. The choice between round or teardrop implants depends on the patient’s breast structure and aesthetic goals. After a detailed examination, the most suitable option is recommended by the surgeon.
Dr. Ercan Demiray uses the 3D Vectra imaging system to determine the most appropriate implant type and to simulate the potential postoperative appearance. During the consultation, patients can visualize the expected results together with the doctor before making a final decision.
Implants can be placed either under the chest muscle or above it, depending on the patient’s chest wall structure and breast anatomy.
Can I Choose My Implant Type?
The most suitable implant type for your body will be determined by Dr. Ercan Demiray. With the help of 3D Vectra imaging, you will be able to see a virtual simulation of how the selected implant will look on your body before the surgery.
Teardrop implants, also known as anatomical implants, are designed to match the natural shape of the breast and often provide a more natural appearance. However, if the patient has experienced breast volume loss after pregnancy or requires a breast lift, round implants are often preferred. Round implants can also create a fuller appearance in the cleavage area.
Where Are Implants Inserted and Where Are the Incisions Made?
To place round or teardrop implants, incisions may be made in different areas depending on the patient’s anatomy. These incisions can be located in the following areas:
Around the areola (nipple area)
In the breast fold (under the breast)
In the armpit (axillary region)
In the navel (belly button)
For placement through the nipple area, the nipple must be of a certain size, typically with a minimum diameter of 4 cm.
The inframammary incision (under the breast) is currently the most commonly used and standardized technique. A small 4–5 cm incision is made under the breast fold, allowing the surgeon to place the implant easily while maintaining full control of the surgical area. This technique is widely preferred because it allows the use of both round and teardrop implants.
The armpit incision is usually suitable only for round implants and allows placement only under the muscle. Its main advantage is that the scar is less visible. However, limitations such as the inability to use teardrop implants or perform future revisions through the same area restrict its use.
The navel approach also has limitations, as it allows only saline-filled implants and only under-the-muscle placement, which is why it is less commonly used.
Will Breastfeeding Be Affected After Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery does not usually interfere with breastfeeding. There is also no proven relationship between breast implants and breast cancer.
However, as with all women, patients with breast implants should undergo routine breast cancer screenings after a certain age. Since implants may sometimes affect mammography imaging, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) may be recommended for more accurate evaluation in some cases.
Will There Be Scars After Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Like many cosmetic procedures such as tummy tuck, facelift, or breast reduction surgery, breast augmentation may leave small scars depending on the location and depth of the incision.
The key factor is the placement of the incision. Incisions made in natural folds such as the armpit, under the breast, or below the navel usually become faint and less noticeable within 7–8 months as the healing process progresses.
Scar formation may also depend on genetic factors, skin type, skin color, and surgical technique. Performing the procedure with minimal tissue trauma and precise surgical techniques helps reduce the visibility of scars.
The incision site is determined based on the patient’s breast anatomy, implant type, and detailed medical examination. Therefore, the surgical method and implant type may vary for each patient.
What Type of Anesthesia is Used and How Long Does the Surgery Take?
Breast augmentation surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Recovery After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Patients usually stay in the hospital for one night after surgery. Patients traveling from other cities or abroad are generally advised to stay in Istanbul for at least 5 days.
Most patients can return to their normal daily activities within 7–10 days. Depending on the patient’s condition and the surgical technique used, physical exercise and sports activities can usually be resumed after 30–45 days, with the approval of the surgeon.
