Gynecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement)

Gynecomastia refers to the enlargement of breast tissue in men. Contrary to common belief, it is a very common condition. Hormonal imbalances, liver or thyroid diseases, and certain medications can cause breast enlargement in men. However, in more than 90% of cases, no specific underlying cause can be identified.

Today, several modern treatment methods are available for male breast reduction.

How Does Male Breast Enlargement Appear?

Gynecomastia in men can present in several different forms:

  • Enlargement caused by an increase in glandular breast tissue

  • Enlargement caused by excess fat tissue

  • Enlargement caused by a combination of both glandular and fatty tissue

What Treatment Methods Are Used?

In the past, open surgical techniques were commonly used to treat gynecomastia. However, these procedures had disadvantages such as visible scarring and difficulty removing tissue evenly, so they are rarely preferred today.

Op. Dr. Ercan Demiray generally prefers modern liposuction techniques instead of traditional open surgery for patients with gynecomastia. With advances in technology, modern procedures such as laser liposuction and VASER liposuction (ultrasonic liposuction) are widely used.

These techniques provide more effective aesthetic results while eliminating one of the major concerns of patients—visible scarring. In cases where breast enlargement is caused by glandular tissue, the powerful effect of the VASER device can also effectively treat hardened breast tissue.

How is Male Breast Reduction Performed with VASER Liposuction?

VASER liposuction is one of the most effective treatment options for gynecomastia today. Also referred to as VASER lipolysis or VASER liposuction, this technique specifically targets fat cells without damaging surrounding tissues such as blood vessels, nerves, or connective tissue.

Because the device selectively targets fat tissue, procedures performed with VASER generally result in less pain, swelling, and bruising compared to traditional methods.

The rapid recovery process allows patients to quickly return to their normal daily activities. Using ultrasonic sound waves, VASER liposuction is an effective and successful treatment method for male breast reduction as well as fat removal in other areas of the body.

How is Laser Liposuction Performed?

Laser liposuction is another frequently used method for male breast reduction. In this technique, laser energy is used to liquefy the fat tissue within the breast area, which is then removed from the body.

Laser technology also contributes to a faster recovery process, making it a widely preferred treatment option.

Do I Have to Undergo Surgery for Gynecomastia Treatment?

Currently, there is no effective non-surgical method to permanently eliminate male breast enlargement. Trying to treat gynecomastia with products sold on the market may even lead to undesirable results.

However, modern techniques such as VASER and laser liposuction are considered minimally invasive procedures, providing faster recovery and greater comfort compared to traditional surgical methods.

What Type of Anesthesia is Used? Can Gynecomastia Recur?

The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s condition and preference. Patients can usually be discharged on the same day.

Since the excess tissue is permanently removed, recurrence of breast enlargement is very unlikely.

Preparation Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Before undergoing male breast reduction surgery, the following precautions should be taken:

  • Herbal teas, vitamins, and blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin) should be discontinued approximately 7–10 days before surgery. If you regularly take prescribed blood thinners, you should inform your doctor.

  • If general anesthesia will be used, you must fast before the procedure as instructed by your surgeon.

  • Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided.

  • After surgery, you will need to wear a medical compression garment for approximately 2–3 weeks, as recommended by Op. Dr. Ercan Demiray. The medical team will provide this garment after the procedure.

Will There Be Scars After Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Thanks to modern techniques, traditional open surgery is often unnecessary. Instead, VASER or laser devices are used.

A very small incision is made to insert the thin cannulas used by these devices. Through this incision, ultrasonic or laser energy is delivered to dissolve the fat or glandular tissue. As a result, visible scarring is usually minimal or absent.

Additionally, these technologies may provide a skin-tightening effect, which can help enhance the definition of the chest muscles.
